Shape the Future of Exotic Animal Medicine
The Scientific Committees of the 7th International Conference on Avian, Herpetological, Exotic Mammal, Zoo and Wildlife Medicine (ICARE) are calling for abstracts (presentations and posters) to be presented at the 2026 meeting in Lisbon, Portugal.
This five day scientific conference will focus on both practical information for beginners in the field as well as for experienced veterinarians. Veterinarians and other experts in the field are therefore invite to contribute to this unique event and to submit a proposal by October 15, 2025.
Proposals on all aspects of avian, reptilian, amphibian, exotic/small mammal, zoo and wildlife medicine are welcome. These include results of original research, case reports, clinical studies, and review articles.

Abstract Submission Deadline
Authors of accepted presentations for basic day, masterclasses and/or wet labs will then be expected to submit a full paper by December 21, 2025.

We invite the submission of abstracts that address any of the following topics:

- Masterclass (Avian, Small Mammals, Herpotology, Zoo & Wildlife)
- Practical lab (Avian, Small Mammals, Herpotology, Zoo & Wildlife)
Instructions for Authors
- Abstracts must be written in English not exceeding 250 words (excluding title, authors, affiliations) and must be submitted as a Word file (.doc or .docx) via the online submission platform.
- Use font Arial 10 characters per inch (font size 10).
- Use single spacing and type the text unjustified without hyphenating words at line breaks. Use hard returns only to end headings and paragraphs, not to rearrange lines.
- Type title in sentence case in bold with no full stop at the end
- Type family name first followed by the initials (Rubbens P.P., Van Eyck J. etc) and underline the presenting author.
- List affiliations as follows: Department, Institution, City, Country (do not mention street addresses, PO boxes or zip codes). When there are multiple affiliations number them as follows and use the semi-colon between the multiple affiliations: ¹Dept. A, Hospital A, City, Country; ²Dept. B, Hospital B, City, Country etc.
- Insert a blank line after the affiliation(s).
- It is strongly advised to submit structured abstracts. Organise your abstract as follows:
– Objective/Introduction
– Patients and Methods
– Results
– Conclusion - Paragraph headings should be typed in bold followed by a colon and by regular text. Do not insert blank lines between the headings.
- Max 2 figures or tables are allowed. These will not count towards the word limit. Figures must be embedded in the Word file, underneath the abstract, and must be cited in the abstract.
- The use of references is strongly discouraged and must be limited to max 3. Insert a blank line before the heading References. When you list references, use superscript numbers in the text and list max 3 authors, followed by , et al.
- Author A, Author B, Author C, et al. Title of the scientific work. Title of the Journal year; issue n°: page–page.
- Author D, Author E, Author F, et al. Title of the scientific work.Title of the Journal year; issue n°: page–page.
- Author G, Author H, Author I, et al. Title of the scientific work. Title of the Journal year; issue n°: page–page.
- Support or funding must be mentioned in a separate paragraph. Use the optional heading Acknowledgement. Insert a blank line before the heading Acknowledgement.

Important Notes:
When submitting an abstract for presentation, submitting authors should bear in mind that:
- presenters are NOT exempted from paying the registration fee
- A notification email will be sent the week of December 8.
- The presenting author must register online by January 20, 2026
- The abstract of the presentation will only be published in the proceedings, when the presenting author is registered by January 20, 2026
Full paper
Authors of accepted abstracts for oral presentations, posters and poster pitches will be expected to submit an extended abstract or a full paper (including references and acknowledgements) by December 21, 2025. These documents will be reviewed by members of the scientific committee, revised by the authors if needed and finally published in the ICARE 2026 Proceedings. Notification on January 14, 2026.
